HOW TO APPLY FOR A HABITAT HOUSE

How do I apply for a home and what is required?

Habitat for Humanity of Alvin-Friendswood-Pearland holds an application orientation meeting about once a year (depending on our build rate).  You must attend an orientation meeting to receive an application for a Habitat house.  We currently do not know when our next orientation meeting will be held.  However, if you would like to be notified of our next application orientation meeting, please provide your name and mailing address (street, city and zip code).  You may either email this information to HabitatAFP@yahoo.com, or call 281-648-3633 and leave the information on the answering machine.  Notifications are sent out by U.S. Mail only.  We do not send notifications by email or phone.

The service area for our Habitat affiliate is the greater Alvin, Friendswood, Pearland area.  You must be a resident of this area to be considered by our affiliate.  If you live outside this area, then you will need to apply at the Habitat affiliate in your area.  To find the affiliate in your area, go to www.habitat.org and click on the Local Affiliates link and enter your zip code to find the affiliate closest to you.

There are 3 basic criteria on which applicants are evaluated.  These criteria are explained in detail at the orientation meeting and are summarized below.

  1. Need for adequate shelter.  Your need for adequate shelter is determined by the condition and size of your current housing along with the size and gender mix of family members.
  2. Ability to pay.  You must have the ability to make monthly house payments.  Your total mortgage payment, taxes, insurance plus the rest of your debt should not be greater than 36% of your total income.
  3. Willingness to partner.  You must be willing to work a certain number of “sweat equity” hours in the construction of Habitat houses, you must be willing to participate in Habitat’s family nurturing program, and you must maintain your home in good condition.

What is sweat equity?

Sweat equity is volunteer work that you perform building houses in partnership with Habitat for Humanity.  It’s also part of your down payment on your home.  Per current policy, a minimum of 400 hours per family is required before a family can move into a home.  This number is subject to change prior to the start of the next orientation meeting but will be locked in at the time your application is submitted.

Habitat builds houses every Saturday (except for the months of June and December) starting at about 8:00 a.m.  You may start earning your sweat equity hours at any time.  You do not have to submit an application or be selected for a home before you can start earning your sweat equity.  However, earning sweat equity hours in advance DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU WILL BE SELECTED FOR A HOME.  Also, you will not be paid for any sweat equity hours you earn.  Sweat equity tracking forms are available at the job site.

How do I get to the construction site?

Our current worksite is the Huser Village subdivision in Alvin, Texas.  Take Highway 35 Bypass to Mustang Road and turn toward the Alvin Community College.  Travel past the college about one mile and turn left on Ben Drive, the main entrance into the Huser Village subdivision (look for the large Huser Village sign on walled entrance).

How much will I have to pay?

The total cost of the house and the monthly payments will vary on house-by-house basis and are determined by such things as Habitat’s actual construction costs and the length of the mortgage.  The mortgage is interest-free.

Will I get to choose the floor plan, the location or other details of the house?

Applicants do not get to choose their floor plan, location, nor other details of the house.  Limited choices for a few amenities may be available on a house-by-house basis depending on donated materials.

How can I find out more about Habitat and get more information?

You can attend one of the monthly meetings, held on the second Monday of each month, except for June and December.  Meetings begin at 7:00 pm at Friendswood Methodist Church, 204 W. Edgewood (FM2351). Or you may call 281-648-3633 and leave a message.  The answering machine is checked frequently and your message will be forwarded to the Family Selection Committee.
